Who this site is for
Hey — if you’re worried about what’s coming to Pecan Island, or you just want to know what’s actually going on, this site is for you. I built it to keep up with the news as it comes out, every single day, and to lay out the facts about what’s really planned for Pecan Island. Down below, you’ll also see what people are saying side by side with what SpaceX has actually done in other places.
I’m a Louisiana resident who grew up in the Acadiana area, and I love this state just as much as you do. I’m not here to sell you a side — I’m here to make sure we all know what’s happening in our own backyard.

Rumors vs. facts
What people are saying — and what has Space X done in other locations
Common concerns about SpaceX coming to Pecan Island, answered with documented examples from Boca Chica, Texas.

Rumor
“SpaceX is going to ruin our coastline.”
Fact
Here's the good news: at Boca Chica, Texas, SpaceX has actually funded beach nourishment, dune restoration, and wildlife-monitoring programs as part of its environmental commitments. The company works hand-in-hand with state and federal agencies, and even pauses activity during sensitive nesting seasons. That same restoration-first mindset is what we can expect here, so our coastline stands to get more care, not less.

“Launch traffic will destroy local roads.”
Fact
You can breathe easy on this one. In Cameron County, SpaceX paid for road upgrades, reinforced heavy-haul routes, and funded traffic-control plans around launch days — local taxpayers weren't left holding the bill. Roads around the site ended up better than before, and the same investment would come with any work here.

“It will be too loud and constant.”
Fact
Launches are far less frequent than people fear. Boca Chica's flight schedule is tied to federal permits and weather windows, not daily activity. Every static fire and launch is announced days in advance, sound monitoring is in place, and late-night activity is limited. Most days are completely quiet.

“Only out-of-town workers will benefit.”
Fact
Local families have been first in line. SpaceX hired locally in Cameron County for security, logistics, facilities, and hospitality, and area contractors and suppliers won real contracts. On top of that, launch viewing brought a wave of tourism spending into nearby small towns — money that stayed in the community.

“Our fishing and wildlife will be driven away.”
Fact
The opposite has held true in Texas. SpaceX operates under strict environmental oversight from the Fish and Wildlife Service, funds ongoing wildlife studies, and the surrounding Lower Rio Grande Valley refuge lands remain full of life. Launch sites and thriving refuges have coexisted there for years — there's every reason to expect the same balance here.

“Property values will collapse.”
Fact
History says otherwise. Around Boca Chica and nearby Brownsville, property values and new investment climbed after SpaceX arrived, as jobs, visitors, and attention flowed into the region. Communities near launch sites have generally seen growth, not decline — Pecan Island could share in that upside.

“They'll take over the whole town and push locals out.”
Fact
Life in Boca Chica's neighboring communities went on as normal — families kept their homes, traditions, and daily routines. SpaceX bought land from willing sellers and worked around existing communities rather than displacing them. Pecan Island's character and way of life aren't going anywhere.

“The marsh and wetlands around Pecan Island will be destroyed.”
Fact
Wetland protection is actually written into how these projects get approved. In Texas, SpaceX was required to follow federal Clean Water Act permits, restore affected areas, and fund conservation work beyond its own footprint. Oversight agencies watch every step, and the same protections would guard Louisiana's marshes.

Land and development activities surrounding Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish have accelerated following the announcement of SpaceX's multi-billion-dollar Starbase Louisiana spaceport. The project footprint involves approximately 125,000 to 130,000 acres of coastal marshland, acquired through state arrangements linked to a coastal damage settlement involving former Exxon property. Development plans include multiple launch pads, propellant production facilities, on-site power generation, worker housing, and extensive upgrades to local roadway, water, and electrical infrastructure.
State and local officials have tied several economic and restoration commitments to the land transaction. Louisiana coastal authorities confirmed that $100 million generated from the state land purchase is intended for coastal efforts, alongside voluntary company pledges to finance marsh rebuilds and shoreline stabilization. Locally, a $20 million initial payment is scheduled to be split among parish taxing bodies, providing anticipated funding relief for Vermilion Parish schools, the sheriff's office, and the police jury.
Despite promised economic and infrastructure improvements, the initiative has generated notable opposition among Pecan Island residents and conservation groups. Concerns center on the speed and secrecy of the development process—marked by non-disclosure agreements, early surveying, road markings, and aerial marsh inspections—as well as the potential devastation of fragile marsh ecosystems and traditional community land. More than 1,600 public submissions to the Federal Aviation Administration have formally warned against waiving federal environmental safeguards on the island's coastal habitats.
